The_Brooklyn_Banks: Closing

The Brooklyn Banks is scheduled to be closed this from this December until the scheduled date of the completion of the repair of the Bridge is complete in 2014. For the 5 year scheduled close the Skatepark will be used as a staging area for the mandatory construction on the bridge. Yes this means that the city will be Salvaging the area from its current run down state for the better of the bridge which is awesome being that without the bridge these buttresses and pillars would not even exist. However it is of more importance that this section of the Bridge’s architectural support system has been Salvaged By BMX Riders, Skateboarders, Rollerbladers, and scooter riders for decades. Within the creativity of any type of street rider or skater is the desire to Salvage the urban landscape and put it to a great further use; their own. This transformation of Architecture into ridable obstacles has taken place since these sports were created, and here under the bridge the transformation of what was created as only pillars and buttresses has been transformed into THE MOSTÂ FAMOUS street spot in the world, and without a doubt the BEST street spot in the world. What it seems that the city of New York has failed to notice(among other things) is that by closing the Brooklyn Banks they are not only taking this Skatepark away from New York riders but they are taking it away from riders worldwide. Yes it is dirty, yes the walls are covered in BAD graffiti, and sometimes it smells like urine but to us it is a paradise and those who share this love for the place clean and take care of it without being told to do so.
